Here’s a very basic crispy onion rings recipe that’s very quick and easy to make while also being free from gluten, dairy and eggs. Feel free to add spices to the batter for more flavour, but in my opinion these turn out pretty good even without.
I often hear Coeliacs say how much they miss onion rings, but they are so easy to make, there really is no need to miss out. 🙂
- Plain flour (I used Doves Farm gluten free plain flour)
- Black pepper
- Vegetable oil
- Slowly add water to plain flour until you get a smooth batter that’s runny, yet relatively thick. Add salt and black pepper.
- Slice the onions.
- Heat up vegetable oil on high heat in a deep frying/sauté pan (the oil should be about 2 inches high or more). This will take a few minutes. To test if the oil is hot enough, put a bit of batter into it. As soon as it starts bubbling, it’s ready.
- Dip an onion slice in the batter with a fork, covering it completely, then let excess batter drip and carefully lower it into the oil. Repeat with all other slices and then turn the heat down to medium. Cook until they turn golden and crispy. Try not to overcrowd the pan/make a few batches if necessary.
